Toronto’s Outdoor Art Festivals

Posted by Moshe Mikanovsky

Winter is still here, but very soon the Outdoor Art Festivals season will start, and deadlines for submissions are either behind us already, or very close to.

Outdoor Art Festival

Last year I tried to visit as many Art Festivals as I could, and also participated in one of them, the Riverdale Art Walk, aka the RAW. Visiting the other shows, I tried to get a feeling for the type of each show, whether it is more of an art show or a craft show, what type of crowds the show draws, the location of the show, etc. I also talked with few of the artists in each show, gauging their experience with the show. Many of these criteria should help any artist decide whether a show is for them or not, but a lot of it is really trial and error. I definitely want to show at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibit, which is considered to be the largest of its kind, shows only fine art, and draws the most serious buyers. But, it is also the hardest show to get in, so wish me luck!

OK, here is the list of shows I gathered. The shows are ordered based on their calendar order. They usually happen around the same time of the year. I included a link to the show’s website as well as to the submission form. Couple of the shows don’t have any information online about the 2011 dates or application info for artists, so I assumed they still happen this year.

1. Artisans at the Distillery Spring Show, Distillery District, May 21-23, 2011. First jury by March 1, 2011 (if not filled, second jury will be available, contact the organizers).

2. Riverdale Art Walk (RAW), June 4-5, 2011. Deadline for submission March 11, 2011.

  1. Hi Moshe…. A couple more Toronto ones are the Junction Arts Festival and the Danforth East Arts Fair. I have just applied to the RAW and The Beaches Arts & Crafts Show. Also thinking of Artistry By The Lake in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Good Luck with the TOAE ! Do you know where I can purchase a tent ? Have tried a bunch of websites, but no luck yet.

  2. Thank you Julie,
Already had Junction Arts Festival listed, but added the Danforth East Arts Fair.
Goodluck with your submissions and the season. I am also planning to submit to the RAW – always doing things last minute…. I am also thinking to try Queen West Art Crawl and maybe Cabbadgetown. But I am definitely looking forward to the TOAE reply…

  3. Julie, regarding a tent – a friend of mine bought hers at Caravan Canopies Canada, 60 Saramia Cr Thornhill, Ontario 905-761-6662
She said they might have changed their name, but the phone number should be the same.

  4. We bought a tent last yearthrough COSTCO online for Canada. It was $ 249.00. Don’t use the American COSTCO as they don’t deliver to Canada

  5. Thanks for all this info on art shows Moshe. I attended the Elora Art in the Yard last year – nice venue. I’ve heard good things about Oakville’s Art in the Park, and Muskoka Arts and Crafts Show, although I haven’t attended either, but will apply this year.
I also agree with you about the tent – order it from Costco because they deliver right away. Best to get an all white one.
