7 days of creation watercolors artwork – Seventh Day

Seventh day, watercolors and ink, 10"x13", 2010
Genesis 2, 1-3:
1 And the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them
2 And on the seventh day G-d finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.
3 And G-d blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it He rested from all His work which G-d in creating had made.
For the seventh day, or Shabbat, I did not want to include the traditional Jewish symbols that are associated with Shabbat, such as Shabbat candles, Kidush cup and wine, or two Challah bread loafs. These are uniquely Jewish, and if the creation stories are true, then the world was created not just for the Jewish faith, but for the entire universe and human kind. Therefore, I preferred to create a more global symbol of completion. And for that I chose Earth.
Given that earth and its continents were probably different at the time of the creation, either with different ice coverage, or different continent land masses distribution, it was clear that the only appropriate way to paint the earth will be in the manner that it is familiar today, so everyone can relate to the piece. What I did tried to create though is the focus on Africa, where the oldest human lives were found, and to show as many continents as possible. So I was glad when I found this view of earth, that shows Africa quite in the centre, and parts of the Americas on the left. Only missing are Australia and Antarctica…
This piece, concluding the entire series, has a calm feeling. Earth is centred in the middle of the composition, and the blues, greens and yellows, all create a relaxed atmosphere.
If you like these paintings, or would like to comment on them, I would love to hear your comments.
This painting is part of the series, which I presented at the Israeli Artists Group of Toronto 2nd Annual Art Show. It is available for sale. Price for one painting is $300 (+ tax). For all 7 paintings $1800 (+ tax). If you are interested in purchasing, please contact me. The entire series will be available soon as Giclee prints as well. I will publish more details in the near future.
I will also show the entire series (with a new “Fourth day” painting) at the Riverdale Art Walk, aka the RAW, on June 5-6.
Cheers
Moshe
