Contemporary Jewish and Israeli Art in Toronto
Last week was a great weekend for me. I participated at the 2nd Annual Art Show of the Israeli Artists Group of Toronto, and the experience was just amazing!
The few weeks leading to the show was busy with preparations. I came up with a new series of seven paintings, depicting the 7 days of creation. Working on these pieces was a lot of fun, and I am planning to write more about it in future posts, maybe a post per day… But not less important was the feedback I got about the artwork.
The show had 23 artists, and wall space was quite limited, so each one of us got a 6 feet wall to present the art on. I came up with the calculation that hanging the paintings in two rows, with an inch or two between each painting, will fit into the 6 feet wall. At the end though my wall was a bit wider, and gave my art quite a nice background.
Opening night was on Thursday night, and I arrived there around 6:30. I was so surprised when one of the artists told me that I already sold one of the paintings! I thought she was pulling my leg… but she was not. I actually sold “Fourth day“, a colorful painting showing the moon and the sun in sundown. I was so excited about it!

"Fourth day" label and red dot!
Later, the opening night was very busy. Even with the heavy rain that night, many people came to see the great artwork. The following days had much nicer weather, and our visitors came constantly. Overall, the show was really successful. (You can read more about it and see more pictures on the group’s blog). I talked with many people and explained my artwork, and was pleased with the comments everyone gave me. Mostly, people loved it! There were few favourite among the 7 paintings, but people liked the style, the idea behind it, the contemporary design of a traditional theme, the colors, the writing of the Torah verses, and the overall layout. Some of the comments also gave me ideas for future paintings. And this is what it is all about – sharing the art, and growing with it.

Now I am getting ready for my next show, at the Riverdale Art Walk (RAW), on June 5-6 (Booth 52). I am even more excited about this show because it is the first time I will be doing an art fair. There are so many preparations to do! I hope everything will work out, and that the weather will be nice… Stay tuned for more information about this show.
Cheers
Moshe
